I think it's safe to say that you won't make it in Japan.
However if you want a working holiday you could come here to New Zealand? American's are entitled to such a visa (I'm pretty sure of it though you might want to double check that). All you need is financial support ($NZ6000 which is $US4000) and a ticket.
College degrees aren't necessary to get jobs here too. Plus with your ability to speak Mandarin, and New Zealand's recent free trade deal with China and the large Chinese speaking community here you would probably do quite well.
