That's happening more often, but more as a way to get people interested in a title, and to eventually buy it. Simply put, publishers are never going to make the money from internet advertising that they will from actual books.
And why would a "fan" read a title he likes on a site full of ads when there are sites with no ads?
True fans will always do the right thing and buy the book to support the author and publisher ... and to make sure more books come out. I like seeing whole series sitting on my shelf, which I don't get from online.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard people say things like "So-and-so volume 5 didn't make any sense, I can't stand that series now." and I saw "That series isn't out in English yet. I didn't know you read Japanese." and they say "No, I read it on XOXO site."
Those are scanlations. Who knows who good or bad they are? If it doesn't make sense, there is probably a reason for that.
