Like clothing, hairstyles changed throughout history. Prince Shitoku wore his hair in a "top-knot" style like the court in China, which he admired so: During this period (the Asuka Period (550-710 A.D.) the Japanese court was influenced by styles from the Tang Dynasty of China.
Hairstyles were signs of marital status and tied to social class. The poorest people and outcasts (called "hinin" and "eta" which means "non-humans") had their hair cropped short all over the head, instead of gathered up into a queue (or braid). Samurai had the top of their head shaved, with the hair at the back and sides gathered together into a queue, oiled, and then doubled forward over the crown, being tied where it was doubled over. It was very important for a samurai to have every hair in place and embarrassing if it got messed up even during a sword-fight!
i think this is the style you mean but if i remember correctly ronin was a samurai whit no lord or master.
