I dunno about empowering but I listened to music that 'recognised the pain'.

In that respect, I think Smashing Pumpkins - Adore, is one of the most depressing albums ever. Its quite easy to relate to it on a lot of levels if you were ever in the same boat as Billy Corgan was.

Other than that, 'Gothic Metal' (or whatever u wanna call it) like Lacuna Coil, are also pretty good to me in the types of music to listen to. The lyrics might not be exactly what you always want but the music is nice and dark.
