NanteNa, which type of "cutters" are you referring to? Many are doing itis specificaly for the scarification ( I know a few professionals in this field this line) and the majority of self-mutilation from depression is done for the intensity of the pain to which serves as a mental focusing sensation.
As for tattoos and piercing, even in the S&M community, its rarely done for the pain involved with getting either of them, though some truly enjoy that too. However the piercing is sometime done as a means for inflicting pain later. But NanteNa is right, the vast majority of piercings these days is purely for decorative reasons.
Just a clarification, please. When referring to sefl-inflicted pain, are we referring only to that which comes from mutilation, or other forms?
