Fans just want you to show more skin and managers just want you to...show more skin and make more money. The pressure to go nude has two routes. Either you break into "mainstream" and never have to go nude (until you are broke and played out) or go from gravure idol to "image videos" to porn flicks. Of course a lot of girls drop out to get married or something else...few of them are household names...but there will always be the otaku.
I remember a few years ago I was in Yokohama and was at a mall and saw a sign that a "mini-concert" would be held an hour or two later. The "concert" was a trio of young girls in matching frilly dresses and they sang two or three songs. The crowd of a hundred-plus was full of men aged 25-45 with very nice Nikon and Canon cameras. At first I thought "Oh, this is a press junket. All these guys are reporters or paparazzi. These girls must be really famous." But then I noticed that no one else in the mall seemed to notice the "concert" and in actuality all the guys were super-fan otaku following the "rise" of these up-and-coming pop-idols.
I never heard of the "idols" again, but I am sure those men enjoyed their pictures. The only difference is gravure idols don't sing.
