Am I engaged or not? -

Hello everyone!
In short I am living with my boyfriend(???) who is Japanese. We are discussing marriage and thinking about 2 years from now getting married but he says we are not engaged yet. Also I am a white American girl. But apparently his parents are accepting of me and that makes me happy. But why do you think he wants to marry me but says we are still just boyfriend and girlfriend?
