I met my wife just before I moved back to the US. We went out a few times as friends (I was seeing a couple of girls at that time) but not romantically. After I left, she was the only one I found that I could trust and she and I talked often and e-mailed every day. We became great friends and started having feelings for each other. I went back to see her after a year and we fell in love and got married (on paper for the visa paperwork to start. Our traditional ceremony will be at Himeji castle in April when the Sakura are blooming). I think it is difficult to have a LDR if you met, but not impossible if both want to work on it. If you haven't met or never plan to it is impossible.
