Yes, they can work. Mine's great but the distance part is coming to a close, thank god. We're both at our wits' end. We've met 4 times, chat for a long time every day, voice, webcam, all that jazz.
I strongly advise not going into one unless A) You know the person's the one, and B) You know you're both strong enough to handle the physical and mental needs you sometimes won't be able to fulfill
