Out-of-the way places well worth the travel. - 12-31-2008, 12:55 PM

I thought it'd be nice if we could build a list of places which are off the beaten track, but so amazing that they're worth going off-track for.

Let's not be picky, though. Do you know a place in a huge city which is off the tourist trail? Let's hear about it! Know of a terrific sight worth sailing out to a tiny island for? Tell us!

I'll kick-start with the grave of Miyamoto Musashi. A zen garden has been sculpted around the swordsman's grave marker in Miyamoto, Okayama, and it's truly a beautiful place. Miyamoto Musashi's is not the only grave marker - others present include that of his father.

A train station a mere five minutes' walk up the road makes this easy to get to - the Chizu Express' Miyamoto Musashi station.

A few snaps:

The majority of the grave markers are here, toward the back of the park.

Part of the garden, which also has stepping stones, a seating area, and a dojo.

Statue of Miyamoto Musashi.
