Megumi film screened prior to U.N. human rights confab - 03-13-2007, 08:57 PM

Tuesday, March 13, 2007
A documentary on a 13-year-old Japanese girl abducted by North Korean agents in 1977 hit the screen Sunday at a human rights cinema festival held in Geneva prior to Monday's opening of a U.N. Human Rights Council session there.

Among the audience of about 200 people were foreign diplomats and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour, who said she expects that the film will help stir international calls for resolving the issue of forced disappearances. Vitit Muntarbhorn, a special U.N. rapporteur from Thailand slated to report on North Korea's human rights situation during the session through March 30, said the story is heartbreaking and made him learn afresh that the abduction issue has not been resolved.

Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Just walk beside me and be my friend.-- Albert Camus
