When I began studying by myself about three years ago, I used they "Human Japanese" free software to study Hiragan and Katakana for the first time. As I continued to learn common words, phrases and sentence structures, I stuck with the ganas only in order to get a comfortable, solid foundation of them before delving into kanji (which I use the "iKnow!" website for studying).
