When people refer to Japan being expensive, it`s not necessarily food costs they are referring to. In fact, I`d say that you can eat very cheaply in Japan with a minimum of effort.
It`s the
other costs of living that hurt.
Like the cost of rent (in Tokyo the average is something like 70,000 for a tiny one room). The cost of utilities - our electric bill is something like 12,000/month even though we don`t use all that much. Same for gas. Phone costs an arm and a leg to set up most of the time, etc etc. Not to mention that public transportation costs add up... And furniture, appliances, etc are not exactly cheap.
