I see... Personally, I wouldn't go as far as saying "basterdised", though. When I went to Italy, I admit, the pizza was on a different level when it came to taste, but it wasn't hugely different to places like Pizza Hut and Dominoes etc. I'd say the main difference would be the quality of the base. It's kinda like French baguettes. They're made in the same fashion in England, but they always seem to taste a million times better when bought in France.
I will say one thing though, I only saw one "deep pan" pizza in Italy. It was usually thin and cooked in those traditional ovens, which I think give it extra deliciousness (if that is even a word, lol).
