Hi! Im Italian too!
I can tell you that regarding the language, spanish and Italian are very different. As Rinnegato said, an Italian guy can't understand a Spanish. Yet these two languages sound very similar: the pronunciation is nearly the same and there are even some identical words; but the rhythm of the speech is very different.
Moreover there are a lot of "false friends" e.g.:
"garza" in Spanish means heron, in Italian means gauze
"burro" in Spanish means donkey, in Italian means butter
and so on.....

Regarding the people, I think they are very different... but that's not an objective opinion.
