Sounds like Tokyo is on a different planet from the rest of the country. And I was no where near the country...about 10 minutes from Osaka station by train. I used to bring omiyage from America for my immediate neighbors when I went home and me and my downstairs neighbor got to be pretty good friends.

Privacy is a huge priority? Take a typical American to a public bath and tell me who is worried more about their privates.

In your experience no one gives a crap about each other. That's not my experience. I was here for the Great Hanshin Earthquake. Moments after it happened people were outside knocking on doors making sure neighbors (especially old people) were alright.
