It's Latin: "Anno Domini". It's generally used to signify the change in year counts after the birth of Jesus Christ. Nowadays, political correctness has replaced "AD" with "Common Era" (CE). Quite silly to me, but that's just my opinion.
Also, if you want to study history well enough to understand it, it appears you need some studying of general terms used in historical discussions first.
