[A Sonnet Concerning Death]
When eyes do close and see the light no more
With one last breath to draw the air of life
A final heartbeat leading through Death's door
To think, “What next?” fills my whole self with strife.
Could everlasting darkness be the end?
Eternal nothingness could be my fate?
My life so meaningless in vain I spend?
Cruel death so empty on me will not wait.
Yet through the void I see a hopeful light
Once the grave is dug and the body mourned
Life after bitter death; could this be right?
I live again, into forgiveness born!
By the blood of Christ I'm saved from my sin
And immortality in Heav'n I win.
