I guess it depends on your life..
I know many foreigners who couldn't stand Japan and outed after a year.
Some stayed on to live and learn, I was one of them and I did adopt somewhat, although definitely felt like I was always on the outside looking in which I felt was fun.
Still love old Nippon and would be back in a shot if my situation was different.
Australia is hugely popular for young Japanese to live for a while, even more so the one's who cannot fit into Japanese society.
It is sad really that they "have" to fit in.
