That's because he probably worked out a precise nutritional balance for his meal after he stopped eating. If any normal person stopped eating there would be a strong urge to eat a lot after the diet, therefore eating. Whether it be a large portion or a small portion you body will take more of that portion into the fat for storage due to the lack of stable eating throughout the period you haven't been eating, as a natural reaction to starvation.

And like said above, it's not healthy. Just eat slowly and stably and exercise.
