In the same year commodore came out with C16, Japan came out with a computer called MSX. I have always owned an MSX (bought every newer computer of that brand which came out) computer till around 10 years ago.
Being a Japanese computer all games were in Japanese language. All games you find around now and they seems new, they were born for that system and I saw them years before people got to meet the for playstation or nintendo (Ys, Metal Soldier and many others).
Moreover in the beginning MSX had memory like C64 (not big), thus games didn't have kanji. That is why maybe now I don't find that hard reading an all kana text
