Is it dubious? Inconclusive doesn't mean dubious.
Unless you think North Korea actually put a kiloton worth of explosives in the ground... or you think they have some sort of Earthquake machine that caused the richter scale to jump...
Furthermore the "consolidation of power in order to transition leadership to his son" theory is but one of many.
It might be right... but all theories should be taken into consideration. Including the theory which sees North Korea continuing it's nuclear testing because it believes the West is gutless to do anything about it (I think that's true) and because the only way North Korea can establish itself in the long term is via obtaining nukes.
