What program? Because if XP Pro isn't showing Japanese characters, you're doing it wrong.
Edit I'd never heard of XP Pro Essential. I did some googling and wikipediaing. It looks to me like XP Pro Essential is only a pirated OS. If this is true, I'd like to point out that you get what you pay for.
Microsoft's own site lists only five versions of XP:
XP Home
XP Pro
XP MCE
XP Tablet PC
XP Pro x64
