This actually occurs because when your body enters stage 4 of nrem (the stage just before you begin to dream) it releases chemicals that paralyze your body so that you do not act out your dreams and you just wake up or move before your try to move before your body has fully recovered from this.
I too have had this happen and i was pretty scary for a second.

But i like the ma dea idea too it shows how people tried to explain unknown ideas with what they saw as a rational solution.
