I don't think it is as rare and as isolated to emo's as you think.
They seem to be displaying a yearn for belonging. Most people do this at some stage in their lives, and most people take it too far.
In this case, wanting to be a vampire, they want to belong in a way that sets them apart, makes them elite, and makes them feel special.
But it is really little different than any fashion that does not come naturally to its wearer, or any religion or social group that is not based on knowledge, for that matter.
