Buying pirate copies for me has at least one severe consequence - most of consoles have protection against backup copies in order to prevent people playing the non-original versions of the titles, meaning even if you buy a game you can't just copy it and burn again to play in the case you damage the original. Unless you use a mod chip of course.
Also some companies disponibles their old games to download for very low prices, if you're using a modern console and want to play old games.
