I'm in California in LA County. LA seems to be the J-rock be-all and end-all in Cali, so there are people who openly embrace it, but the only place I really find J-rock fans are J-rock concert lines or Japanese class, never really on the street. And the ones I find tend to be obnoxious.
I'd say it has moderate popularity here. It's easy enough to find J-rock CDs, sometimes maybe not in your 'local' music store, but it's easier to get your hands on as opposed to, say, 10 years ago. I wish we were as embracing as Europeans, though, because it caught on over there in record time compared to here in the US. Most of the good bands go to tour Europe half the time, no US, or if the US is included it's only a couple of stops, most likely around or in LA, in which case I'm very fortunate.
