Cool/cold tea has been around about as long as hot tea. Tea with ice has been served in Japan during summer as long as there have been ways to get ice to put into it.

Ahh, that makes sense. I have just noticed that sometimes visitors here seem surprised when its served. Maybe its because restaurants assume and don't ask whether we want hot or cold tea.
