I met few people that didn't develop a new appreciation for their home country after living in Japan. That doesn't mean they had a bad experience, but it is such a life-changing one.
It's like teenagers that hate living with their parents, but once they are on their own they realize that life at home had a lot of advantages they didn't notice until they were gone.
