There is very very little or no homeschooling in Japan. High schools are generally split by interest - some are strong in one area, others in another. Students choose which high school they was to attend.

There are also vocational schools - a high school attached to a two year "university", with the curriculum connected as a sort of 6 year program.

I am pretty sure there are special needs schools in every area but elementary and junior high are generally integrated into the local schools.
