Judging from the sorts of things I'm hearing in this thread... it's the American education system that should be put under the microscope... not the Japanese.
Ronin4hire you want to cite generational gaps. I have Japanese friends in their early to mid 30's who say what they learned after they lived in other countries for a time is far greater than what they learned in school Japan. I know younger Japanese in their mid 20's who seem to know more but they say they know more only because of research they have done themselves. Try asking more than one of your Japanese friends in different age groups and see what answers you get.
