To blacks, in America anyway, "nigger" means exactly what the OP said. That's the context in which it was used. It was used in a derogatory sense to keep us down and such and can be thought of as "the white man's slave". To us, that's how it was used. Why blacks use the term amongst one another is just downright stupid and degrading.

IMO, some people will never understand that.
