Yes, you're right. All we know is after they'd done it once (out of free will), they chose to do it again (out of free will)... and again... and again... and again...
Anyway, I've never been to war, but I've been in equally as fucked situations that occur in war. It never bothered me. I would not mind war.
Of course, different characters of people are suited to war. The character a child grows to be is shaped by the world he/she/it grows up in. The world was much different back then, making for much stronger people.
It's only logical war was much less of a psychological blast in a world where there's so much more mental conditioning and mental preperation before you enter it.
