I believe "visa extension" is usually referred to as ビザの延長 (visa no enchou) but in your case, it looks like your boyfriend needs to find a new job/sponsor.

One option to give himself some more time would be for him to switch over to a visitor visa. Unfortunately, it's not a guaranteed thing and he may have to leave the country once.
