Anyways, I'd have to say the last gen takes the vote for me.
Sure games nowadays look fantastic, and pretty much resemble real life. Backgrounds, water, cityscape, etc. all look phenomenal.
But something was lost when they started pumping everything into the "looks" of a game. They sacrifice story for gameplay.
Now instead of having a 13-30 hour game, you get a 6-8 hour game, with a rushed story and poor character development. Or you get boring gameplay, with a good story and a rushed ending.
In the past, games had a great balance of both story and graphics.
There are a few PS3/Xbox360 games that are outside this. Such as Oblivion, Metal Gear, Fallout, Devil May Cry, etc. All those games look amazing, play awesomely, and have a great story and good development.
