When I went on my student exchange to Japan, I had two days of literally doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and touring Onsens in Akita Prefecture, where I was staying.
I found it extremely awkward, but for some reason, it felt completely natural at the same time, all the old Japanese ladies didn't seem to really care that I was there.....when I seriously expected something to happen since I was staying up in the countryside where people aren't used to foreign people. The onsen at summer camp is a different story....
The only thing I didn't really like was the smell. It didn't smell like people relaxing in clean water, it smelled like people bathing in hot, dirty pool water that was sitting there for two weeks with no pool-boy, which in turn caused me to wake up twice in the middle of the night feeling like I was gonna puke my guts out.
