What's the reasoning for shifting the appearance criteria?

You'll find that appearance plays a stupidly large roll here. Apparently it all depends on what the customers will be intimidated by, so they usually want you to be skinny, clean-shaven, short haircut, meek demeanor, etc. Basically, if you have your own personality, can it.
