To be fair, some people cannot afford even twenty dollars for a crappy book, let alone the decent ones that are much more expensive. I started learning on my own when I was like 14, and I didn't receive an allowance and was too busy with school and volunteer work to get into a good university that I couldn't get a job. Plus it's nearly impossible to get a job at 14 in the US anyway.
OP, Tae Kim's guide is excellent. You should get Anki and start doing hiragana and katakana flashcards, too.
