I myself studied Japanese for 3 years alone, it is tough but believe me it is possible to reach intermediate. Took me a very long time to meet Japanese people but I got in contact with them after I took a trip to Toronto. I know it sucks studying alone but don't give up keep pushing;use Anime Drama and other sources to improve your vocabulary
Speedanki.com Kanji Memorization this site will prepare you for the JLPT test, it helped me a lot I wished I knew about it before hand when I started or I could have finished it. Also use about.com they also have an efficient source of information you can use! so hang in there ! Dreams Come True!!!
