Wars and bad blood between nations still exists and world wars were really not that long ago. Obama was just trying the JAapnese custom of greeting, whereas bowing means very different things in different context and cultures. It was, like you said, inappropriate but still no harm done. I just wonder where are Obama's advisers. I mean the president reading straight from a Japan travel guide?
Keep in mind that I am also British. Aye, every country has it's prejudices, but I'm fairly certain that each country has a certain that is more prominent than the rest.

I know that wars were not that long ago, but that was in a different generation when the culture of the world was different. To say that bowing to an old enemy is disrespectful is like saying that being civil to an old rival is disrespectful to your own morals.

Yes, they have a history. But bringing it up as an excuse is disrespectful in itself.
