I was a big fan of Anne Rice (and her works under other names), but the vampire stuff and her endless descriptions of New Orleans became tiresome. But her "Cry to Heaven" is still one of my favorites.
Lately everything that has held my interest has been non-fiction, though.
Top of the pile for now is
Jung Chang ("Wild Swans" and "Mao") and
Irwin R. Tang ("Asian Texans" and "Gook, John McCain's Racism"). Tang is difficult reading for anyone, but the detailed information and insight he can cram into a small book is incredible.
