There does seem to be some significant overlap with their written forms. Should I start with the written? Although it also seems in order to understand the written, one must know how to vocalize the sounds (pinyin?) so maybe spoken is better to start with?

Most people would say Mandarin. China is poised to become the #1 country in the world economically. Japan is not.
