A lot of it has to do with how well you hear the differences and how familiar the person is with each accent. I could hear the differences in the Aussie and NZ accents, but knowing only one native from Sidney I couldn't judge her's.
As for favorites, its not the sound of the accent but what it indicates. When a Korean or Japanese man is speaking broken English, he usually has my complete attention.
