Because of the rules.
You don't use specific rules for specific counters, otherwise they wouldn't be rules at all.

いち + きろ
きろ starts with a き so it falls under this rule, meaning we turn いち into いっ.
After a while of using the rules and learning the odd exception here and there (Some exceptions are listed in the wiki
here), you will just know what to say automatically.
