All my life, I've been having to say, "[Insert Chinese name] isn't Japanese."

I don't understand why people get this mixed up just because the countries are close geographically. Do people in Japan do the same thing but the other way around (getting British and French people mixed up or something similar)?

I never even knew Kaela Kimura was only half Japanese until recently. It should have been obvious to me because Kaela isn't a Japanese name but I read it as カエラ. So when I saw it as Kaela I thought it was just inconsistent romanization.
