Key point being how to find things. Other than going around asking people how to get to Kinkakuji.

Kinkakuji is in central Kyoto, just like most of the shrines you are going to want to see. There isn't a whole lot in Southern Kyoto, from how I see it on a map.
I guess I am trying to figure out what you are doing. What I am saying is, I don't understand why people think the longer you are there the better. Personally 2 months alone in Kyoto with no one there I know sounds a bit hellish. Kyoto is a beautiful and clean city with a long history, but after a week (or less) I would run out of things to do. Temples and shrines get old pretty quickly, no matter how much you love Japan (or Buddhism or Shinto)
