1) I think that using romaji in the beginning CAN BE harmful. Language learning is not black and white---we both know that.
2) I think we both know that if you take 100 students and start kana on Day 1 and 100 students who don't learn kana until Day 100 the students that will know know hiragana and katakana will be at an advantage and will more likely be stronger than the ones that have only learned using romaji.
Will there be some strong students who have studied learning just romaji? Sure there will be. But, I think if you look at ratios the kana reading group will be stronger overall.
