This isn't directed at you specifically, Kyle, but I know that sometimes yahoo.jp's dictionary (When you're in the 国語 section, not 和英) can help to differentiate between when to use each kanji. It also tells you usage rules for certain words with similar meanings. I advise anyone to check it out.
