Personally I think this is a good method. Today I still remember all the kana; where on the other hand I forgot the structures of all 20 amino acids that I've learned from organic chemistry. Actually that's how I learnt a bunch of Kanji while studying Japanese. I think songs are not always the best way to learn proper grammar, but a good source to learn new words.
