Personally I think this is a good method. Today I still remember all the kana; where on the other hand I forgot the structures of all 20 amino acids that I've learned from organic chemistry. Of course, you have to keep using the kana just like ABCs... As my psysiology professor said "If you don't use it you will lose it"

Actually that's how I learnt a bunch of Kanji while studying Japanese. I think songs are not always the best way to learn proper grammar, but a good source to learn new words.
