Also in Japan you aren't allowed to go to public bath houses if you have tattoos because they are associated strongly with yakuza.
They will not let you into gyms either. Tattoos just have an all around bad stigma in Japanese culture. So I would not get a Kanji tattoo.. you look silly and seedy to Japanese people by having one. And an "immortal" tattoo will just look ridiculous once you are dead of course.
